I was driving back down to the Jersey Shore I today and suddenly I realized something strange. Where as I previously was able to count very easily my favorite bands with female lead singers on one hand, my iTouch had suddenly become dominated by an influx of powerhouse women frontmen (expression). The charts have become inundated with soft angelic voiced babes. So, I took the liberty to list the Top 10 Female Fronted Acts of 2009. In reverse Tarantino-style order:
10) MPHO - Who is this? HOw did I come across her? I don't remember but think Santogold (Santigold...w/e) M.I.A. She's got a very similar look (here and here). Her main track is called "Box & Locks" and sounds more and more like Santogold every listen but with more of M.I.A.'s british accent. It's a fun singalongable song with a catchy guitar riff I just found out was sampled from some 80s one hitter. Also check out "Fix Ya Face".
Here's Box & Locks.
9) Amanda Blank - It's tough to rank these girls cuz I enjoy all of them but Amanda Blank has also got some good stuff (myspace). She is from Philly (actually grew up right near me haha) so I gotta support her but I can't help but again compare her to Santogold and M.I.A. - both of which she has collaborated with already being that she is Spank Rocks new protege. She has a very hipster style and utilizes M.I.A.s style of sound effects such as gunshots and shouting in several songs. Some of her stuff is very sexual (see "Gimme What You Got" and "Might Like You Better") unlike Santogold but she definitely has swag more so than either of her previously mentioned counterparts and MPHO. Although I do not see her upcoming album as being as influential as the two leading ladies of indie there are some jems.
Listen first to "Make it Take it" at www.myspace.com/amandablank
8) La Roux - I used her picture so that the number one wouldn't be revealed so easily but I do like La Roux. She is very unique and creative however the one thing that bothers me is I don't think her album has a follow up single after "Bulletproof" but its still a very entertaining album ( and I like her track "Fascination"). I've only listened to it once or twice while I've been doing other things though so I admit she might actually deserve a higher spot than 8th. The albums called La Roux so buy it on iTunes.
7) Kid Sister - see previous post haha. Yeah like I said I might regret this ranking but I just have this hunch about Kid Sister she has good enough rhymes, beats, and the right people behind her. Here's her myspace make sure you listen to "Get Fresh" - a very fun song that is reminiscent of Missy Elliots attitude and persona if you know what I mean. Like a swag but not arrogant - what I'm saying is I wish I were friends with Kid Sister haha. I feel like she would be very fun to hang out with. Thats all.
6) The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - This is where the countdown changes pace. These guys spill out creativity. They have the whole band feel unlike the last couple artists with a talented guitarist and drummer who know their roles well and produce great backing tracks for exciting vocal melodies. Amy Winehouse actually asked them I guess when she was somewhat living to open for her but the vocalist sounds more like Amy and Duffy than anyone else I can think of. She has that retro feel and overall the bands (poorly named) album "Fruit" is really enjoyable. And guess what - they're supporting Katy Perry on her tour. Interesting.
Key tracks are: "The Sun Ain't Shining No More" and "Push the Envelope" and "Crazy" although I think the whole cd is great with great lyrics an overall interesting and original music. HERE
END PART I:
___To Be Continued Tomorrow I just got too tired. ZZzzzz
